Categories: Election 2022
Punjab Congress Committee (PCC) chief Navjot Singh Sidhu is fuming after the party named Charanjit Singh Channi as its chief ministerial candidate for the 2022 assembly elections.Sidhu may have publicly backed Channi's candidacy. However, he and his family members have both directly and indirectly expressed their displeasure with the party's decision.Sidhu attempted to throw a tantrum in Dhuri on Sunday during party leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra's rally. Priyanka was seeking votes for Balvir Singh Goldy, who is contesting the election from Dhuri against AAP nominee Bhagwant Mann. Interestingly, something unusual happened after Dalvir Singh Goldy's wife, Simran Khangura, invited Navjot Singh Sidhu to address people. The choice of Charanjit Singh Channi as the chief ministerial face has infuriated Navjot Singh Sidhu and his camp. This was a major setback for Sidhu, who had been portraying himself as the CM's face during the election campaign.According to sources, Sidhu was expecting to be named the CM face as he was consistently promoting his Punjab model of development to strengthen his candidacy. Navjot Sidhu has been close to Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, who had backed his entry into the Congress when the same was objected to by the then-CM, Captain Amarinder Singh."Channi is my younger brother. He knows how to answer these questions," said Sidhu, while adding that "I can tell you about my income. I used to earn Rs 2030 crore in a year. Today, my monthly income is between Rs 60,000-70,000 per month, but we are happy and satisfied.”"This illiterate [Bhagwant Mann] claims that I own Rs 169170 crore. Allow us to keep our homes and trade other assets," Channi said. In an affidavit filed with the ECI, Charanjit Singh Channi declared assets worth Rs 9.4 crores. Opposition parties, on the other hand, claim that he owns assets worth Rs 170 crore."He only has Rs 170 crore. Perhaps he is a poor man for Rahul Gandhi," Bhagwant Mann said.Channi's close relative's recovery of Rs 10 crore and other assets has tarnished Channi's Aam Aadami image. He has, however, denied the allegations.
