Russia engages New Delhi to abstain hours before vote on Ukraine at UNSC

Russia engaged New Delhi, a key strategic partner, ahead of the meeting on Ukraine at the UN Security Council on Monday. Sources told India Today that Ukraine was very much part of the agenda when Ambassador Sergey Vasilyevich Vershinin, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Russia met Reenat Sandhu, Secretary (West) in the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA). The meeting that took place in Delhi was focussed on the processes at the United Nations. Sources told India Today that the Russian minister briefed Secretary Sandhu on “developments of the state of affairs in the consultations between Russia and the US and security guarantees with respect to discussions at the UNSC”. According to a statement released by MEA, both sides agreed to work closely together, given the common challenges faced and in keeping with their long-standing Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership. “Secretary (West) congratulated Russia on its upcoming Presidency of the UN Security Council in February 2022. Both sides held wide ranging discussions on issues on the UN Security Council agenda and related developments. Both sides agreed to deepen cooperation on issues of mutual interest at multilateral platforms,” the MEA press release said,The Russian delegation also briefed India on its priorities during the 76th session of the UN General Assembly.
