some easy tricks to help you remember irregular past participles
Categories: Basic English
Here are some easy tricks to help you remember irregular past participles (the 3rd form of verbs):
1. Group them by patterns
Many irregular verbs actually follow hidden patterns:
- Same in all three forms → cut – cut – cut, put – put – put
- Same in past + past participle → make – made – made, build – built – built
- -en ending in participle → write – wrote – written, speak – spoke – spoken, break – broke – broken
- Vowel change (i → a → u) → sing – sang – sung, drink – drank – drunk
2. Use mini-stories
Example:
- “He sang a song, then he had sung it many times before.”
- The story connects past tense with past participle.
3. Rhyming & grouping practice
- begin – began – begun
- swim – swam – swum
- ring – rang – rung
Practice these in rhyme: “Begin–began–begun, swim–swam–swum, ring–rang–rung!”
4. Flashcards or apps
- Write the base verb on one side, and past + past participle on the other.
- Quick daily practice locks them into memory.
Quick example list (pattern: base – past – past participle):
- go – went – gone
- eat – ate – eaten
- see – saw – seen
- come – came – come
- take – took – taken
