Russia says 'ammunition explosion' caused explosion at Crimeanmilitary airport
The RussianDefense Ministry said on Tuesday that "an explosion of aviationammunition" was behind the explosion at an airbase in Crimea, which wasreported by several eyewitnesses in the area. That contrary to some reports, itwas not an attack and there were no damages or casualties.
Earlier,Reuters reported that loud explosions were heard from a Russian militaryairbase in Novofedorivka, Crimea. The area was part of the peninsula occupiedby the Russian military and was one of several military bases established bythe Russian military. According to eyewitnesses, black smoke was seen billowingfrom the military base and several videos shot from nearby beaches were alreadycirculated on social media.
According toReuters, eyewitnesses heard 12 explosions in a minute. Half an hour later,three more explosions occurred and sirens were heard in the nearby town ofSaki. Sergei Aksyonov - Crimea's Kremlin-appointed governor - posted onTelegram that he visited the military airport after the blasts and that "thecircumstances are being clarified". Previously, North Korea offered100,000 "volunteer" troops to aid Russia's prospects in itsongoing invasion of Ukraine.
"Thereare reports that 100,000 North Korean volunteers are ready to come and takepart in the conflict," Russian defense analyst Igor Korotchenko toldRussian Channel One.
