After US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's controversial visit toTaiwan this week, China on Friday (August 5) said it was canceling severaldefense meetings with the United States. Beijing also postponed major climatetalks. Cooperation between China and the US on the prevention of cross-bordercrime and drug trafficking and the repatriation of illegal migrants was alsoclosed.
Climate talks jeopardized as China and the United Statesunveiled a surprise climate agreement at the COP26 summit in Glasgow last year.Both countries are the world's two biggest carbon emitters. TheChinese Foreign Ministry said on Friday it was suspending cooperation withWashington on crackdowns on illegal migrants, judicial aid and internationalcrime, as well as drugs.
China sees self-governing, democratic Taiwan as part of itsterritory and claims Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen woulddisregard China's one-nation policy for formal independence - a red line forthe nation. Beijing even claimed that if needed it would use force tounite the two regions. And vowed to take one day by force if necessary.
Pelosi's visit to Taiwan has raised tensions between Chinaand the US as Beijing begins a massive military exercise in the waters aroundTaiwan. Taiwan's Defense Ministry confirmed on Thursday that the Chinesemilitary had fired missiles near the Matsu Islands.
The ministry said 11 Chinese Dongfeng ballistic missiles werefired into the waters around the island. On Friday, Taiwan claimed that by17:00 (local time), 68 Chinese aircraft and 13 warships had crossed the "MiddleLine", the unofficial but previously respected demarcation line ofTaiwan's territory.
