Video gamers have better decision-making skills, says study
We have all been scolded for playing too many video games. No matter it's careful, methodical maneuvers in an all-out guns-blazing frenzy or strategy game, blockades abound from our people. While video games improve hand-eye coordination, that's not reason enough for anyone to let us play them calmly.
Now, there's one more reason to favor playing video games.Researchers have found that video games improve decision-making skills and even have a positive effect on the area of the brain that takes care of this task. "Our work gives some answers to that," Dhamala said.
"Video game play can be effectively used for training – for example, decision-making efficiency training and therapeutic interventions – once relevant brain networks have been identified." This research has been done by Georgia State University of America.
Project lead writer Tom Jordan, who was mentored by Dhmala, had a personal story to share. As a child, Jordan had low vision in one eye. The doctors advised him to play video games blindfolded. The vision in his weak eye improved.
During the course of the research, the researchers selected 28 college students who were video game players and 19 who did not. Using an fMRI machine, the subjects' brain activity was monitored while they played a simple test game. It was found that gamers were quicker and more accurate in their responses.
