Gaming has no effect on health: Oxford University study
Gamers rejoice! Because one study concluded that gaming has no effect on people's well-being. This study has been done by Oxford University. Rather than just a survey of gamers experience, actual gameplay was tracked. The study used data shared by seven game publishers.
The gameplay habits of 40,000 gamers were tracked with their consent.Andy Przybilski, one of the researchers, said the large-scale study provided strong evidence that gaming had no effect on gamers well-being.
"With 40,000 observations over six weeks, we actually found an increase in video game play and a decrease in life satisfaction had a fair chance of predicting emotional state, and we didn't find evidence for this – we found evidence that it was practically significant. No way,” said Przybilski, who was quoted by The Guardian.
Players were asked whether they were playing for healthy reasons, such as socializing and having fun with friends, or talking negative such as a feeling of compulsion to accomplish goals in the game. It was found that those who wanted to play for negative reasons also reported overall satisfaction. There was a note of caution in the study, however. Although it was found that gaming did not affect well-being, if a gamer increased their gaming time by 10 hours a day, the observation was not correct.
