UP among the three poorest states in the country in MPI ranking, Akhilesh targets BJP

After the defeat in the 2022 UP assembly elections, Samajwadi Party (SP) national president Akhilesh Yadav has targeted the BJP government on the report of the NITI Aayog. Akhilesh wrote on his Twitter handle on Monday that Uttar Pradesh is among the three poorest states in the country in the first Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) of NITI Aayog under the BJP rule. Akhilesh wrote, “Uttar Pradesh ranks third in the highest malnutrition rate and Uttar Pradesh is in the worst position in the entire country in the child and adolescent mortality rate category. These are the tags of the BJP government's failure." He also posted a newspaper clipping which claimed that UP is one of the poorest states in the country. NITI Aayog in its first Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) report has said that Bihar, Jharkhand and Uttar Pradesh are among the poorest states in the country. According to the index, 51.91 percent of the population of Bihar is poor. It is followed by Jharkhand number. 42.16 percent of the population there lives below the poverty line. Uttar Pradesh is at third place, where 37.79 percent of the people are poor. In Madhya Pradesh 36.65 percent and in Meghalaya 32.67 percent people are poor. Apart from this, Kerala (0.71 percent) tops the states with the lowest poverty in the country. It is followed by Goa (3.76 per cent), Sikkim (3.82 per cent), Tamil Nadu (4.89 per cent) and Punjab (5.59). NITI Aayog in its MPI report has highlighted the poor states of India. Among the Union Territories, Dadra and Nagar Haveli has the highest poverty. There 27.36 percent people are poor.
