EU to invest €8mn for bunker to prevent secret talks
The European Union is investing €8 million in a secure bunker in Brussels so that leaders can discuss their sensitive topics without a secret. About 100 persons can be seated in the chamber, including 34 leaders, their 34 note takers, protocol, technical and culinary staff. The safe zone will also be used for discussions by ambassadors and senior EU officials.
The block currently has 27 members which may increase in the future, as reported by EUobserver. Additionally, both the conference space and the booth will be surrounded by a NATO-certified insulation cage, in order to "reduce the risk of exploiting compromised emissions" or the electromagnetic and radio waves produced.
The area will be unplugged, equipped with a large screen conferencing system for 30 secure interpretation booths. The bunker will offer a seemingly definite decoration, like a flag, but no flowers or any other object. The memorandum states that VIPs will be provided with adequate level of facilities like furniture and seats. The bunker as envisaged in the EU Council will be there.
By 2024, the facility will be constructed in the EU Council building in Brussels, which already serves as a venue for meetings. Although the exact location has not been chosen, officials are looking for a place that will make it easier for the leaders to move back and forth.
